Kampung Sungai Petai is in the sub-district of Sungai Petai which is in the district of Alor Gajah. It is about 25 kilometres from Malacca town. Under the Alor Gajah Parliamentary, Kampung Sungai Petai has its own distinctive qualities as compared to other villages. For instance, most of the villagers here are friendly and they love to exchange pantun. Pantun is Malay quatrains, originally use for teasing especially during weddings. It can be said that pantun is a timeless tradition in this village. |
Basically, Petai or stink bean which is a favourite vegetable taken raw among the Malaccan Malay community. Most often it is eaten raw with rice. Known as Parkia Speciosa from the Leguminosae family, the tree grows everywhere around the forests especially in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Thailand. Additionally, the hot and humid climates enable the trees to grow fertilely. Realising its popularity, many has venture into its cultivation as an agricultural activity as it could generate handsome profit. It is said to have special properties which can prevent ailments if taken in the proper manner. |
